This duck appears to be predominantly grey duck, but hybridization with the introduced mallard has led to many birds, which at first glance appear to be grey ducks, showing hybrid characteristics. It has been suggested that continuing intrusion of mallard genes may drive pure grey ducks to extinction, if not already.
