Myrtle rust is highly infectious and could devastate New Zealand native ecosystems by killing native myrtle trees. Government officials attempted, unsuccessfully, to eradicate the fungus when it was first discovered in New Zealand (this plant was carefully removed and destroyed by officials the following day).
