Little penguins are, as their scientific name Eudyptula minor suggests, the smallest of all penguins. They can be found right around the coast of New Zealand and southern parts of Australia, but despite their wide range and relative abundance, most people won’t have seen one alive because they come ashore on rocky coasts only under cover of darkness. I’ve added some new photos of little penguins ashore at night. If you see photos of one these penguins out in the open during daylight, chances are there is something wrong with it. Little penguins are also known by many other common names, including blue penguin, little blue penguin, fairy penguin, and korara.
